It has some spots that haven’t aged well (fantasy racism!), but this is definitely the best encapsulation of 90s anime trends and emotional beats with a minimal amount of bullshit, if you’ve ever wanted to watch something throwback. I still like it a lot.
This is a pretty slim season for new series–lot of sequels and continuations. And it’s winter, which is always sort of the dump season anyway. Still, there’s a few potential gems.
The plot is a big ball of nonsense that only matters insofar as people FEEL things about it, but also the characters are real good.
Isekai isn’t my bag most of the time, even if we’re talking about the 90s stuff that tended to be a lot more interesting (and a lot less gross) than the male wish-fulfillment version of the genre exploding at present. But there is one I adore: Escaflowne, the […]

The back half of premieres, which was mostly….fine. Yup, fine. And occasionally incompetent.
Yes, it’s that time again. I haven’t slept in days. Everything is colors. But there are at least two shows this season that fill my soul with music.
I’m still bowled over by what a find this series is. It’s a comedy about horny teens that actually focuses on its female lead and her agency, talks about sex in terms of how awkward and often silly it is rather than “hey don’t you wanna jerk off […]
